WRTM Upgrade Programme

The WRTM strategic model is updated following the national census of 2018. This includes:

  • The 2013 version of the WRTM has been updated utilising 2018 census information and the WISE projections for the Waikato (creatingfutures.org.nz).
  • The 2018 Base model is complete.
  • Until such time that the future scenarios are released, interim forecasts are available for 2021, 2031, 2041, 2051.
  • Future forecasts for 2025, 2035, 2045, 2055 will be released in mid 2023.

Expansion of the WRTM

The WRTM programme is undergoing an expansion from a single model (the WRTM strategic model) to a suite of models. The expanded WRTM programme looks to deliver greater efficiency and effectiveness of investment decision-making through more specific modelling tools. This is in recognition that over time the needs of infrastructure owners have evolved to require more detailed assessments for project option testing, and most recently into changing national and local policy changes.

The first of the new tools is the Hamilton Transportation Model (HTM), a mesoscopic model for the Hamilton Metropolitan area. The objective of the HTM is to provide greater confidence informing transport and land use decisions in the Hamilton metropolitan area using existing and future transport demands from the WRTM.

The release of the HTM is anticipated to be in 2024.
